University of Brigant Medical Sciences Awarded £4.2M Grant for Autonomous Surgical Robotics

The University of Brigant School of Medicine and Faculty of Engineering have been awarded a £4.2 million research grant from the UK Health Innovation Fund to pioneer next-generation autonomous surgical robotics.

Led by Professor Fiona MacLeod, Chair of Robotic Surgery, the research initiative focuses on sub-millimeter precision tools designed for minimally invasive neurosurgical and cardiovascular procedures. The project bridges academic research at the Lady Lawson Street campus with clinical trials across leading Scottish teaching hospitals.

"Our goal is to combine real-time computer vision, low-latency sensory feedback, and adaptive AI algorithms to assist surgeons in high-complexity operations," said Professor MacLeod. "This grant accelerates our path from lab simulations to hospital theatre validations over the next 24 months."

The grant will fund eight post-doctoral fellowships, two specialized robotics cleanrooms, and open-source software libraries for peer medical research institutes worldwide.
